GWG Winter Course – Leaders of the First World War

In this course, we will examine a diverse, global array of battlefield leaders . We’ll look at successes, failures and reputations in the wake of a conflict on a scale none of them were trained to fight.

For those unable to commit to the full ten weeks, we are making individual classes available for you to pick and choose which you attend. Lectures take place on Sunday afternoons and constitute a presentation followed by a lively discussion/debate.

Week Eight – Commander Jòzef Piłsudski with Joshua Zimmerman

‘Nation Building from the Inside.’

In 1914 Poland was partitioned between three Imperial powers. The First World War would prove to be ground ripe for nation building, and this week, we look at a man who fought from the inside. Believing that the path to nationhood lay with Russia’s demise, this Lithuanian born leader organised Polish legions to fight for the Austro-Hungarian armies. Did it work? Did he achieve his aims?

This lecture will take place on Sunday 25th February 2024 at 16:00UK.
